Microphone Preamplifier or Mic
Pre
Next you will need a good microphone preamplifier or
mic pre as it is commonly called to boost the volume of your microphone.
Microphones are almost inaudible without a mic pre because of the low current
they use to allow them to be so accurate making recording without a mic pre
impossible.
If you are recording to a mixing board or recording
console then you may already have a preamplifier. If so
you may choose to use that instead of a outboard preamp but if your budget
allows for it we would recommend an outboard preamp anyway. Why? Because
outboard preamps are usually much higher quality, and besides the microphone, it
is the most important link in the audio chain. A good mic pre can make or break
a recording project. Mic pres with two inputs and a jack for DI or direct input
for direct recording of bass and guitar is a great addition to any studio.
Inexpensive ones can be had for as little as two hundred dollars from companies
like M-Audio and others.
If you can afford it a high end mic preamp like an Avalon, Focusrite, and
others can really make a huge difference in the sound of your project. Low
quality preamps degrade the quality of the sound markedly and a good mic and
preamp are two of the best ways to turn a mediocre recording into a masterpiece.
