Hair metal arose in the late 70s and was the dominant genre in rock music throughout most of the
80s fueled by massive album sales and record breaking live shows.
The term hair metal, hair bands, or poodle rock has been used to negatively
describe this type of music.
Hair metal was a
mixture of glam rock
and
heavy metal
combining heavy makeup with over the top clothing and mountains of hair sprayed
locks.
Heavily distorted guitars and screaming melodic vocals propelled bands
like Twisted Sister, Quiet Riot, Skid Row, Warrant, Great White, Bon Jovi, and
Poison to the head of the hair band revolution. They converted a huge portion of
mainstream rock fans and sold millions of albums in the eighties before their
decline at the hands of the Seattle
grunge movement.
Also called glam metal the movement borrowed their
image from artists like
the New York Dolls and other
glam rock bands but their
musical roots are in heavy metal.
They used MTV as a medium for success flooding the airwaves with videos which
were heavily produced spectacles of rock debauchery and angst. Much of the music
of typical hair bands focus on hedonistic pleasures and the lifestyle of excess,
a subject of many gangsta rap and pop songs of the present. Some argue this
proves that the genre did not die out as many believe due to Americans rejecting
the excess driven lifestyle advocated by these bands but rather these fans were
just ready to move on to new genres of music like
grunge and
hardcore punk.
Hair bands soon became lumped together with heavy metal bands like Def Leppard,
Ratt, Motley Crue, Ozzy Osbourne, Guns and Roses and White Lion who's images as
well as their subject matter and general style differed quite markedly from most
hair bands.
By the early 90's alternative rock
championed
by Pearl Jam, Alice In Chains, and Nirvana dethroned hair metal effectively
absorbing the movement into the
grunge sound.
